Hundreds gather to pray for Ramapough Lenape Indian member shot by N.J. Park Police

MAHWAH, N.J. -Hundreds of people gathered in the woods around Stag Hill earlier this afternoon for a Native American healing ceremony at the site where Emil Mann was mortally shot by New Jersey State Park Police.
Many of those in attendance belonged, as Mann did, to the Ramapough Lenape Indian Nation. Others were several members of Mann's family, as well as local officials and representatives of area Native American tribes.
The crowd was somber as it was urged, through Native American prayers and songs, to pray for the spirit of the 45-year-old Monroe man who was shot by police during a tribe cookout on April 1 last year.
Mann, who was a Ramapo town worker, died of his wounds April 10.
Chad Walder, the officer who shot Mann, was indicted by a grand jury last week and charged with reckless manslaughter in the incident. |
