Nozzolio wants taxes collected on cigarettes sold on Native American land

NEW YORK STATE -- A New York State Senator is calling on the governor to collect taxes for cigarettes sold on Native American land.

Republican Michael Nozzolio from the 54th district sent a letter to Eliot Spitzer Friday. In the letter, he says not collecting the taxes is causing a $200 million shortfall in the state budget.

Nozzolio also says by allowing nations to not pay taxes it's giving them an unfair advantage over other retailers. He says the Senate has put bills in motion to enforce tax collection but they have not become law.

Senator Nozzolio represents parts of Cayuga, Tompkins and Seneca Counties.

Does New York State have the right to impose taxes on Native Land? Is Indian Country part of New York State? Should we be selling a product that is proven to cause cancer?
