We get press when Native people want a casino, or a Native chief is willing to have an abortion clinic on tribal land in opposition to US politicians. A Native mother is killed fighting a war in Iraq, she leaves behind two young children, and we are told this is good, that there is a mountain named after her.
Why is it that gambling seems to be the only issue of Indian Sovereignty that hits the local papers?

Seven Firms To Seek Aqueduct VLT Contract
by Joseph Wendelken , Assistant Editor
Seven groups are seeking a lucrative state contract to operate a video lottery terminal complex at Aqueduct Racetrack, Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s office announced on Tuesday.
The bidders include Mohegan Sun, Foxwoods Development Co. and operators of tracks and casinos in Buffalo, N.Y., Saratoga, N.Y., and Philadelphia, Pa. Also expressing interest was the Shinnecock Indian Nation, in partnership with Gateway Casino Resorts.
“They sent in detailed business and operating plans that will be evaluated,” said Jeffery Gordon, a spokesman for the governor’s office.
The 4,500 terminals, already approved for Aqueduct, have long been seen as a way to restabilize the state’s cash-strapped racing franchise and create additional revenue.
But the Shinnecock-Gateway team has set its sights higher. They hope to build a full-scale casino in Ozone Park, which would generate more than $2 billion annually and create thousands of new jobs, according to spokeswoman Beverly Jensen.

Don't the casinos bring in millions to poor Indian people and help us to lift ourselves out of poverty? The casino money gets invested back into the tribes, and the people on the rez get a lot of jobs too.
What's the down side? |

| There is no down side for you people. You get this tax free money, you rob working people of their money with your casinos, and you still got your hands out for more welfare. |
